The Ultimate Guide to Bottle Feeding Multiples: From Equipment Selection to Money-Saving Tips
Master the art of efficient bottle feeding for twins or triplets while saving money and maintaining sanity
Welcoming multiple babies into your family brings double (or triple!) the joy, but it also means navigating the complex world of feeding equipment and schedules. Parents of multiples typically spend significantly more on feeding supplies in their first year compared to single-baby families. This comprehensive guide will help you make informed decisions about bottle feeding your multiples while keeping both your budget and sanity intact.
Essential Equipment Checklist
Bottles: Quality vs. Quantity
When feeding multiples, you'll need approximately 12-16 bottles for twins (more for triplets). According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you should consider the following factors:
Anti-colic features
Easy-to-clean design
Durability
Cost-effectiveness for multiple sets
💡 Money-Saving Tip: Consider purchasing starter sets in smaller quantities first to ensure your babies accept the chosen bottle type before investing in multiple sets.
Bottle Selection Guide
Anti-Colic Options Research shows that approximately 40% of multiple-birth babies experience colic symptoms. Popular anti-colic bottle choices include:
Dr. Brown's Natural Flow
Philips Avent Anti-colic
MAM Anti-Colic bottles
Standard Options For babies without specific feeding issues:
Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature
Evenflo Classic
NUK Simply Natural
Sterilization Solutions
Cleaning and sterilising your babies bottles and feeding equipment is essential to prevent bacteria growth in milk, which can lead to illness in babies with developing immune systems. Even if equipment looks clean, germs may still be present, so all bottle parts, teats, and caps should be thoroughly washed and sterilised after each use. For breast milk expressing equipment, cleaning once every 24 hours is usually sufficient if the babies are healthy and full-term; however, consult a doctor if one or more of your babies was premature or sick.
There are three primary sterilisation methods: boiling, steam, and chemical. Boiling requires placing cleaned equipment in a pot of water, bringing it to a boil for five minutes, and air-drying afterward. Steam sterilisers, which can also be microwave-compatible, are a fast and efficient option, while chemical sterilisation uses antibacterial solutions that require no rinsing. Proper storage is also crucial; keep sterilised items in a covered, clean container, ideally in the fridge, to maintain sterility. Washing and drying your hands before handling sterilised items further reduces the risk of contamination. (source)
Efficient Feeding Strategies
Efficient feeding strategies can be a game-changer when caring for twins. One effective approach is simultaneous feeding or tandem feeding, which allows both babies to be fed at once, saving time and creating a synchronized schedule. Using a specialized twin feeding pillow can make this process easier and more comfortable. These pillows are designed to support both babies at a 30-degree angle, which promotes digestion and helps reduce the risk of reflux. Ensuring proper head support while using these pillows is essential, as it helps keep the babies comfortably positioned throughout the feeding.
My Experience With Tandem Feeding
It might be challenging at first to tandem breastfeed, but with patience and practice, you may find it more efficient than feeding each baby separately. But keep in mind that some people actually report feeding one at a time is more efficient particularly when you have tiny babies that need to be burped more frequently.
Again, my suggestion would be to seek out a lactation consultant who can provide individualised tips and techniques for successful tandem breastfeeding.
If you are bottle-feeding twins, one product that makes it super easy to do this is bouncy chairs and then you can position yourself on the floor in front of the babies. I liked to lean against the sofa when I did this. This allows you to feed both babies simultaneously. But again, this gets easier the bigger and older they get. I talk more about this in one of my Podcast episodes which you can listen to here.
It is not advisable to use self-feeding pillows or to prop feed your babies. These are very risky and can result in serious injury or death. Basically, what can happen is that as you are prop feeding, your babies may take in extra air from gulping and that extra wind can lead them to choke and die.
Time-Saving Tips
Preparing bottles in advance can be a valuable time-saving strategy for parents of multiples, whether using formula or expressed breast milk. For those using expressed milk, pumping and storing labeled bottles in the fridge or freezer ensures a ready supply, making feeding times more efficient and less stressful. Bottle warmers can also help by quickly heating multiple bottles at once, though some parents skip warming entirely and serve the milk cold, which is safe and can be convenient if your babies don’t mind.
If you’re using formula, a few additional steps are needed. It’s recommended to boil water before mixing formula, and ideally, prepare it fresh before each feed. However, with multiple babies, you may prefer to prepare bottles ahead of time. Be sure to refrigerate prepared formula within one hour and use it within 24 hours. For outings, you can bring boiled water in a thermos and carry the formula powder separately, allowing you to prepare bottles on the go, just before feeding.
Batch Preparation
Pre-measure formula for 24 hours
Use formula dispensers for on-the-go
Prepare bottles in assembly-line style
Night Feeding Organization
Set up a dedicated feeding station
Use bottle warmers with automatic shutoff
Keep pre-measured formula nearby
Money-Saving Strategies
Smart Shopping Tips
Smart shopping can make a big difference when preparing for multiples. Bulk purchasing is a great way to save, especially by joining wholesale clubs, which often offer 20-30% off regular prices. Many retailers also have “Subscribe & Save” programs, where you can save around 15% on recurring purchases of essentials like diapers/nappies and wipes. Timing purchases with major sales events can further stretch your budget.
Optimizing your registry is another smart move: consider registering for multiple sets of frequently-used items, include options at different price points for guests, and request gift cards that can be used for future needs as your babies grow.
Formula Cost Management
According to the USDA, parents of twins spend approximately $3,600-4,800 on formula in the first year. To reduce these costs consider the following:
Generic Alternatives
Store-brand formulas (savings: 40-50%)
Bulk purchasing options
Manufacturer loyalty programs
Financial Assistance
WIC program eligibility
Hospital support programs
Multiple birth association discounts
Establishing an Efficient Routine
Establishing a routine for twins or triplets creates a predictable structure that helps both parents and babies anticipate what’s coming next, making feedings, naps, and bedtime easier to manage. Regular routines support babies' circadian rhythms, making it easier for them to settle into sleep. It’s important, though, that routines add flexibility rather than restricting outings; planning around the babies' needs allows parents to go out confidently, knowing when naps or feedings are likely.
As babies grow, routines should adapt to accommodate more playtime and longer stretches between naps, typically every 1.5-2.5 hours. Following a pattern of wake-feed-play-nap encourages fuller feeds and helps avoid a feed-to-sleep association, so babies aren’t dependent on feeding to settle back to sleep. Aim for a bedtime routine around the same time each night; this could include a quick bath, dimming lights, a bedtime bottle, and a brief story to cue sleep. Putting babies to bed while they’re awake but drowsy helps foster independent sleeping skills, with night feeds reducing naturally as babies adjust to their new routine. (source)

Keep detailed feeding logs initially
Troubleshooting Common Challenges
Managing common feeding challenges can help make caring for twins, triplets or higher-order multiples smoother. For babies experiencing reflux, consider feeding them in an elevated position, which can help reduce symptoms by keeping milk down. Offering smaller, more frequent feeds may also be beneficial, as it places less strain on their digestive systems. For severe cases, parents may explore anti-reflux formula options after consulting a pediatrician, as these formulas are often designed to be thicker, which can help prevent milk from coming back up.
Temperature preferences can also play a role in feeding success. Investing in a reliable bottle warmer makes it easy to achieve a consistent temperature for each feed, but for some babies, room-temperature feeding is perfectly acceptable and can be a time-saver. When on the go, insulated containers allow you to keep bottles warm or at a stable temperature, ensuring feeding is convenient and comfortable, no matter where you are.
Health and Safety Considerations
Health and safety are essential when storing and preparing food for babies. For safe storage of prepared formula, it’s recommended to use it within 1 hour if left at room temperature and within 24 hours if refrigerated. Breast milk can be safely stored in the freezer for up to 6 months, offering a convenient way to keep a healthy supply on hand.
Proper cleaning protocols further support health and hygiene. All bottles, teats, and feeding equipment should be thoroughly washed after each use to remove milk residue. Sterilization should be done regularly, especially for younger infants, as their immune systems are still developing. It’s also important to follow a regular schedule for replacing bottle teats to maintain quality and prevent wear-related issues that could lead to bacteria buildup.
